This vintage British oak gateleg table dates to approximately the 1920s and combines a practical drop-leaf design with classic barley-twist legs and warm, beautifully aged oak.

With both leaves down, it becomes wonderfully narrow and easy to place against a wall, in an entry, beside a sofa or behind a seating area.

Raise one leaf and it works as a compact side or breakfast table.

Open both and the top expands into a generous oval surface that can handle dinner, drinks, books or whatever else the evening requires.

The barley-twist legs and swing-out gate supports give the base plenty of architectural character, while the oak top keeps the overall look grounded and timeless.

Old furniture being considerably more clever than it needed to be.

DIMENSIONS

For reference, comparable English examples from this period often measure around 28–28.5" high and expand from roughly 10–15" deep closed to 27–41" when fully open, depending on model. 

CONDITION

Good vintage condition with wear consistent with age and use.

The oak shows surface scratches, rubbing, finish variation, small marks and natural patina throughout.

The tabletop and leaves show visible age-related wear consistent with approximately a century of use.

The barley-twist legs, stretcher base and gate supports remain visually strong and functional.

I am apparently collecting barley-twist tables now.

In my defense, they are very persuasive.

Closed, this one barely takes up any room.

One leaf up, it becomes useful.

Both up, and suddenly you have a proper table.
