This antique French mahogany sewing table was designed as a compact work table, with drop leaves that expand the usable surface when needed and fold neatly away when not.

Originally intended for sewing, needlework and small domestic tasks, tables like this were made to be both beautiful and practical — a proper piece of furniture rather than simply storage.

The mahogany gives it a rich, warm tone, while the compact footprint makes it especially easy to use today as a side table, bedside table, occasional table or small drinks table.

With the leaves down, it stays petite and architectural. Open them when you need more surface space and it immediately becomes more functional.

A very elegant little survivor with far more uses now than it probably had when it was made.
