This base signature confirms your piece is an authentic work of Southern folk art pottery handcrafted by Cleater Meaders Jr. in 1974.
The Meaders family from White County, Georgia, is one of the most famous and highly respected dynasties in American folk pottery. While they are internationally recognized for preserving early historic American ceramic techniques and creating iconic alkaline-glazed "ugly face jugs", individual family members also threw more traditional utilitarian items like pitchers, jars, and mugs.
The distinctive script incised into the bottom glaze reads "Cleater Meaders 74". The unique applied loop emblem on the front is a classic decorative touch or personalized flourish from his studio work.
• Pieces from the 1970s represent an important era of his work. Cleater Meaders' creations are highly sought after by regional folk art collectors, and examples of his pottery reside in prominent institutions, including the Smithsonian Institution.
