Dating to circa 1820, this fob seal charm pairs a carved banded agate intaglio with warm period 10K gold fittings. The agate's natural striations give the stone a layered, organic depth, while the intaglio carving stays crisp and legible throughout.
The seal is cut with an armorial device possibly bearing the arms of the Henderson of Fordell family of Fife, Scotland, a baronetcy dating to 1664. A shield with three piles, a crescent, and ermine-type devices sits beneath a crest of a hand or arm holding a radiant star with a crescent, all framed by the motto "SOLA VIRTUS NOBILITAT," or "Virtue alone ennobles."
Gentlemen of the early 19th century wore seals like this as both working signets for wax letters and personal emblems of family heritage. Today it makes a distinctive charm to wear or a refined object to display among collected seals and heraldic pieces.
