At 22 inches tall, this substantial candle stand is of the larger hi-tate form traditionally made for Buddhist altar settings rather than the smaller candlesticks typically associated with domestic butsudan altars.

Cast in brass, the candlestick has an elegant architectural silhouette composed of a broad circular foot, stacked baluster and globular elements, a long tapering stem, and a subtly lobed wax-catching dish. The restrained ornamentation allows the sculptural proportions and warm golden brass surface to take center stage.

Known in Japan as hi-tate (火立), shokudai (燭台), or rōsoku-tate, candle stands of this type are traditional Buddhist altar furnishings. Its unusually tall 22-inch scale gives this example a commanding presence and makes it equally compelling as a sculptural decorative object.
The brass retains a beautifully varied surface from age and use, with areas of oxidation, patina, spotting and old wax residue, particularly around the upper candle dish. The hollow underside reveals the rough cast interior and contrasts with the finished exterior.
The central socket is intact; the removable candle pricket/spike normally used to secure a traditional Japanese candle is no longer present. Offered as found, with the surface and signs of use preserved.
