The three elongated figures … Read more A striking vintage figurative oil painting depicting three female nudes rendered in exceptionally heavy, sculptural impasto.

The three elongated figures emerge from a dark, atmospheric ground in a sophisticated palette of mauve, plum, lavender, charcoal, gray-blue, cream and touches of warmer color. Rather than relying on conventional modeling, the artist defines the bodies with dramatically raised black contours and thick passages of oil paint, giving the surface an almost relief-like quality.

Viewed from an angle, the extraordinary physicality of the painting becomes especially apparent. Ridges and ribbons of paint project substantially from the canvas, creating changing highlights and shadows as the work is viewed from different positions. Broadly brushed areas of color contrast with the heavily built-up outlines, allowing the three figures to remain abstracted while retaining a strong sense of gesture and presence.

The vertical composition and simplified treatment of the figures give the work an Expressionist character, while the unusually dimensional application of paint makes the surface itself an important part of the composition.

The painting is apparently unsigned. The reverse of the stretcher is hand-inscribed “Theme 2,” possibly an artist's working title or designation for the composition. A second faint handwritten inscription is present on another stretcher bar but is no longer sufficiently legible to identify with confidence.

Very good vintage condition with minor signs of age consistent with an original vintage painting.
