The stools are built with a distinctly spartan framework: four sharply tapered legs, four seat rails, and a woven leather surface, with no stretchers or secondary bracing. The seat rails are housed into notches cut into the legs. The construction is rustic, almost primitive in its simplicity, but exceptionally sturdy. Sculpted tops on the legs give the stools a distinctly Scandinavian Modern character.

Spence designed extensively for Industria Mueblera S.A. during the 1950s and 1960s. Although examples of this design are sometimes described as American-made, that association makes Mexico the more likely country of manufacture in our view.

The wooden components have been fully stabilized and refinished. Most examples of this design appear with a considerably darker stain; here, we chose not to add additional color, allowing the natural grain and variation of the wood to remain visible.

The original black leather straps show age-appropriate wear but remain robust and ready for use.
