A broad path leads the eye through the foreground toward the water and the expansive horizon, while two finely observed figures provide a discreet staffage element. The imposing pair of trees in the right half of the composition forms a strong vertical counterpoint to the open expanse of sky and water, while the wooded shoreline and distant vessels lend the scene considerable spatial depth.

Oil on wood. Monogrammed “C.G.” at the lower left. Presented in its original period frame. See less
