A sculptural Mid-Century Modern ceramic composition by Ester Wallin for Upsala-Ekeby, Sweden, depicting three stacked owls in a compact vertical arrangement. The warm brown body is animated by exceptionally vivid emerald-green eyes, creating an almost lifelike sense of presence and giving the piece a distinctive graphic intensity.
Dimensions: H 17 cm × approximately 9 cm at the widest point
Weight: approximately 465 g
Designed by Ester Wallin for the Swedish manufacturer Upsala-Ekeby, this ceramic sculpture presents three stylized owls arranged one above the other in a strongly vertical, almost totemic composition.
The modeling is deliberately simplified and compact, with rounded volumes and softly articulated feather details that create depth without sacrificing the clarity of the overall silhouette. Rather than relying on naturalistic modeling, the sculpture is defined through rhythm, repetition and contrast.
Its most striking feature is the treatment of the eyes. Each owl is set with an intense emerald-green glaze, exceptionally vivid against the darker brown ceramic body. Seen from a distance, the three pairs of eyes remain immediately legible and create a compelling optical effect, giving the impression that the owls are actively observing the viewer.
This contrast between the earthy, tactile body and the jewel-like green details gives the sculpture a strong decorative presence while retaining the restrained, sculptural character associated with Scandinavian Mid-Century ceramics.
Despite its relatively compact scale, the vertical construction gives the piece a pronounced sense of height and presence. It works particularly well as a small figurative sculpture, collectible ceramic object or accent piece within a Scandinavian Modern or Mid-Century interior.
Condition: Excellent vintage condition overall. The ceramic body is well preserved, with no major chips, cracks or structural damage apparent. Minor age-related surface variation is consistent with the handmade and vintage nature of the piece. This piece has an attribution mark,
