object :
oil painting on panel depicting a countryside landscape, likely set in central or southern italy, enlivened by two figures walking along a dirt road flanked by a farmhouse with a sloping roof and lush vegetation. The execution technique is typical of 20th-century macchia painting: rapid, dense, and textured brushstrokes, applied with a brush and palette knife to build masses of pure color, instantly capturing the vibrations of sunlight on the ground, clouds, and foliage. The composition unfolds on two levels: in the foreground, on the left, a dark roof and a flowerbed frame the scene; the road, marked by a broad area of bluish shadow, draws the eye toward the horizon, where a blue dome and the outlines of hills can be seen in the background, a detail reminiscent of a view of lazio, campania, or central-southern italy. The sky, broad and animated by white clouds painted with bold strokes, occupies almost half the pictorial surface and contributes to the overall impression of breadth and depth. The panel is housed in an elegant gilded wooden frame with a light-colored fabric mat, enhancing its presentation. At the bottom left, the handwritten signature "g. Pesa" is clearly visible, drawn with a thin brush in a dark burgundy color and featuring the typical elongated "g" that partially underlines the rest of the surname: this is the signature that the artist giuseppe pesa consistently placed on his works, sometimes at the bottom left and sometimes at the bottom right. The execution, style, small-format panel support, and signature are fully consistent with the artist's production, dating to the second half of the twentieth century, presumably between the 1950s and 1970s, the painter's peak period of landscape painting. The attribution to giuseppe pesa (polistena, 1928–1992) is therefore based on three consistent elements: the signature's graphic mark, identical in form and position to those found on other authenticated works sold on the antiques market and at auction; the painting technique, with thick, rapid brushstrokes, typical of the italian macchia painting of the late twentieth century, of which pesa was a personal interpreter; and the choice of subject, consistent with the artist's repertoire, which alternated ligurian views, particularly of camogli, his adopted hometown, with landscapes and scenes of daily life in central and southern italy, his homeland.
information on the artist and/or manufacturer:
giuseppe pesa was born in polistena, in the province of reggio calabria, in 1928. From a very young age, he devoted himself to the study of drawing and painting, attending his first art courses in naples and rome. He held his first solo exhibition in reggio calabria in 1946, followed by an exhibition in rome in 1949, launching an intense career that would soon take him beyond national borders: between 1952 and 1954, he achieved his first major international recognition with solo exhibitions in oslo, stockholm, and helsinki, followed by further exhibitions in the united states in the 1960s. From 1955 to 1975, he lived in camogli, liguria, a town that became his second home and a primary source of inspiration for numerous views of ligurian ports, markets, and landscapes. During those years, he frequented the studio of the painter romolo pergola. From 1980 onward, he exhibited regularly in germany, finland, sweden, austria, and norway, establishing a widespread artistic presence throughout europe, confirmed by his participation in numerous catalogs and exhibitions. A monograph was dedicated to him in the "i profili dell'arte" series, with an introduction by carlo faenza and published by comed milano. In 2006, the galleria la passion de l'art in camogli hosted a comprehensive retrospective curated by giacomo polverino, which spanned his entire career. Pesa passed away in 1992, leaving behind a body of work characterized by a constant exploration of natural light and a pictorial language that, while rooted in the tradition of italian painting, earned him recognition and a market both in italy and abroad, as evidenced by his regular appearances at auctions held by leading italian and european houses.
