Graphic Work / Serigraph by Pablo Serrano, Contemporary Art, 1976 - Valladolid, Spain
Excellent serigraph created by Pablo Serrano (1908-1985) for the 1976 Paradiso Portfolio. He was a Spanish sculptor and is considered one of the most important Spanish artists of the 20th century. The serigraph depicts an abstract figure framed against a fuchsia pink background, which defines the character of the work, emphasizing color over form. In the center, a light gray silhouette with an irregular edge is superimposed on another silhouette in a darker shade of gray, forming a perfect circle. Above this is a yellow and white sphere.
Pablo Serrano was born in Teruel in 1908 and studied sculpture in Zaragoza and Barcelona. In 1992, he moved to Argentina and later to Uruguay. His time in Latin America was very productive; he created a large body of work and won several important awards there. In 1955 he returned to Spain, and two years later he co-founded the El Paso Group with artists of the caliber of Manolo Millares, Rafael Canogar, and Antonio Saura. For a brief period, they developed an avant-garde art unlike anything ever seen in Spain (especially after the Civil War), drawing inspiration from movements such as American Abstract Expressionism and Parisian art movements. Expressiveness, color, and a critique of the political situation in Spain at that time were paramount.
Serrano was a sculptor, but during his later years he became interested in printmaking. This particular serigraph comes from the Paradiso Portfolio, produced by the Paradiso Graphic Art Circuit in Valladolid between October 1975 and June 1976. Each portfolio contains nine prints by Leopoldo del Brío, Pablo Ransa, Cristóbal Gabarrón, Andrés Trapiello, Benito Mauleón, Pablo Serrano, Faik Husein, Martín de Vidales, and Rafael Canogar. Two hundred prints of each work were produced, numbered and signed by the artists.
