A late Meiji Japanese Mikawachi, or Hirado, porcelain dragon-head ship-form vessel, made c.1890–1910. The white porcelain body is hand-painted in underglaze cobalt blue. Mikawachi was developed under the Matsura clan, rulers of the Hirado domain. It became an official domain kiln in 1637, with white porcelain production established around 1640. The standard of its porcelain and craftsmanship gave Hirado ware an international reputation.
The vessel follows the form of a Takarabune treasure ship, or dragon boat, a Japanese auspicious symbol associated with the Seven Lucky Gods and their treasures. The bow is formed as a scaled dragon head with a hollow open mouth and a separately moulded porcelain tongue. The bow deck carries a bat motif and a Buddhist endless knot. Takaramono, including a magic money mallet, scroll, treasure bag and other symbolic objects, decorate the deep oval central well.
A phoenix amid stylised clouds decorates the stern deck, above a spiral diaper band. The hull is painted with crested waves and flying birds. The underside is unmarked, with a broad oval unglazed footrim surrounding a glazed central area.
