This impressive still life features a lush bouquet of flowers, a porcelain vase, and a small sculpture of two putti or cupids. It is a work by the French artist Solange Devienne (1894–1961). Born in the late 19th century, she was a French artist, painter, and watercolorist whose artistic output spanned the first half of the 20th century. She specialized in still life painting, particularly her detailed depictions of bouquets and vases of flowers. His works are distinguished by their harmonious and delicate compositions, often large-format and classically realistic.
A large bouquet of roses, rich in color, dominates the center of the composition. It exhibits the characteristic style of the genre to which it belongs: realistic and meticulous, a style that gradually gained prominence in the history of art. with origins in antiquity and very popular in Western art since the 17th century, still life offers the artist more compositional freedom than other pictorial genres such as landscape or portraiture. Before 1700, they often contained religious and allegorical symbolism related to the objects they depicted. Also known as nature morte, they typically feature animals, flowers, fruits, food, plants, and so on. Their development is part of a growing appreciation for painting and an explosion of interest in naturalism and the imitation of nature that began to develop at the end of the previous century.
This work displays its theatrical character and other Baroque influences, such as the curtain in the background, the use of chiaroscuro, and the arrangement of elements. It seeks not only visual delight but also invites the viewer to contemplate the passage of time, delving into the fleeting beauty of nature, albeit in a gentler way than classic Baroque still lifes.
