lothar fischer studied at the academy of fine arts in munich from 1952, where after just one year he concentrated on sculpture and was supported by professor heinrich kirchner. When fischer exhibited informal works in the old botanical garden in munich in 1957 with the artists prem, sturm, and zimmer, with whom he would found the artists' group "spur" a year later, he provoked a wave of outrage among art lovers and critics. Among the members of "spur," fischer is the only sculptor, developing his objects from an informal impetus, much like the painters. He possesses great technical skill, which he owes in no small part to the intensive study of masters such as marini and stadler. The first half of the 1960s is characterized by playful-looking works such as brightly painted goblins, equestrian ships, and architectural fantasies. After a brief and unproductive membership in the group "geflecht," fischer becomes temporarily interested in elements of pop art in 1968, which manifests itself in oversized toothpaste tubes as large-scale sculptures in his oeuvre. In 1969, fischer invents the so-called "shell sculptures," a multi-layered system intended to integrate the surrounding space. Because fischer sees the human being as such a complex entity that he does not want to depict them directly, he creates only the shell within which the body can be imagined. A recurring theme in the sculptor's oeuvre is the human body, particularly the female body, depicted in a wide range of variations. From 1975 to 1997, fischer was a professor at the berlin university of the arts. The artist, who died in 2004, received numerous awards, including the schwabing art prize in 1967, the city of munich's advancement award for sculpture in 1971, and the rhineland-palatinate art prize in 1990. Lothar fischer is considered one of the most important figurative sculptors of contemporary art. His works can be seen in public spaces and in many german museum collections.
