A “pianura” modular sofa designed by mario bellini for cassina in the early 1970s, a project in which generous upholstered volumes and an exposed wooden structure are brought together in a flexible seating system. The low, deep proportions establish a relaxed seating position, while the broad wooden armrests and substantial cushions give the composition a distinctive architectural presence. Conceived as a series of independent seating elements, the design allows different arrangements, from a continuous linear sofa to an angular configuration, offering multiple possibilities for the organisation of the domestic interior.
the wooden structure forms a continuous platform beneath the upholstered elements, extending beyond the seats to create wide, integrated armrests with rounded edges. The exposed rear reveals a carefully constructed framework of solid wooden slats, whose alternating tones and visible joints introduce a strong geometric rhythm. Large, individually upholstered seat and back cushions rest on the structure, their softly rounded profiles contrasting with the precise lines of the wood. The light-coloured textured fabric emphasises the generous proportions of the upholstery, while the low, rounded black feet subtly elevate the composition above the floor. The accompanying square coffee table, constructed from wooden strips of contrasting tones and supported by matching rounded feet, extends the material and formal language of the sofa into a complementary furnishing element.
the pianura reflects mario bellini’s exploration of new relationships between furniture and domestic space during the early 1970s. Rather than treating the sofa as a fixed, self-contained object, bellini developed a seating system in which individual elements could be combined to create different spatial arrangements. The solid wooden platform extends beyond its structural function, incorporating broad armrests and complementary surfaces that establish a continuous relationship between seating and occasional furniture. This integration of different domestic functions within a single modular system gives the pianura its distinctive architectural character, anticipating a more informal and adaptable conception of the living environment.
