A wonderfully distinctive signed Brazilian carved wood wall sculpture dating to 1979, depicting a colorful architectural doorway in dimensional relief.
Hand-carved from wood, the composition features paneled double doors painted in beautifully weathered shades of turquoise blue and black, framed by carved architectural details and topped with a deeply textured red tile roof. Small metal ring pulls on the doors add another layer of dimension and character.
The sculpture is signed “Tarcisio 79” on the front and retains its original paper label on the reverse identifying the maker as “TARCISIO — ESCULTOR” (“Tarcisio — Sculptor”). The label lists several sales locations in Rio de Janeiro, including Rua São José, Avenida Nossa Senhora de Copacabana, and Praça General Osório. The reverse is also handwritten with an inscription including “Rio de Janeiro,” “Brasil,” and “79.”
Rather than a flat painted architectural scene, this is a true dimensional relief. The individually articulated roof tiles, projecting doorway, carved columns and paneled doors create wonderful depth, texture and shadow.
The combination of weathered blue, warm terracotta red, dark accents and exposed natural wood gives the piece an appealing late-1970s character. It would make a distinctive addition to a collected gallery wall or work beautifully on its own in an entryway, study, living room or eclectic interior.
An evocative piece of vintage Brazilian craftsmanship with particularly nice surviving documentation of its origin and date.
