Rendered in deep olive green, warm ochre, umber and antique gold tones, the scenes have the moody, romantic character of Grand Tour interiors and 18th-century architectural capriccios. One composition opens through a sequence of enormous ruined arches, while the companion scene leads the eye along a dramatic colonnade beneath a soaring vaulted structure. Small figures, horses, statuary and architectural fragments give both scenes a remarkable sense of scale.

The images reproduce works associated with French painter Hubert Robert (1733–1808), celebrated for his romantic visions of classical ruins and imaginary architecture. Brass title plaques identify the compositions as “The Fountains” and “Old Temple.”

The pair was produced in the United States by Turner as decorative framed reproductions. The images are printed on board with an all-over raised, textured surface that gives them the visual character of painted brushwork. They are reproductions rather than original paintings.

Their matching frames are a major part of the presentation. Wide gilt-tone frames feature deeply molded scrolling acanthus and foliate ornament, beaded inner borders, dark brown velvet-like liners and narrow gilt inner moldings. Age-related rubbing and patina soften the gold finish beautifully and complement the warm architectural palette.

Together, the pair has a particularly strong Old World presence and would work beautifully in a library, study, dining room, entry hall or collected gallery wall. Their classical imagery and dark, atmospheric palette are especially well suited to traditional, Grand Tour, European-inspired and dark academia interiors.
