A rare handmade wool pictorial rug commemorating the 1980 Moscow Olympic Games, featuring Misha, the beloved bear mascot of the Games.
At the center of this distinctive textile is Misha, the instantly recognizable bear created by Soviet illustrator Viktor Chizhikov for the 1980 Moscow Olympics. Misha is depicted standing against a rich deep-blue ground, wearing his characteristic five-color Olympic belt, with the date 1980 woven prominently into the composition below.
Surrounding the central figure is an unusually detailed decorative border composed of stylized flowers, geometric motifs, birds, and botanical forms. The border and field draw upon the visual language of traditional woven rugs, creating an unexpected dialogue between folk-inspired textile design and 20th-century Olympic graphic history.
The palette of ivory, deep blue, muted rose, ochre, brown, and soft green gives the piece a beautifully aged and restrained character.
Historical Significance
Misha was the official mascot of the 1980 Moscow Summer Olympics, the XXII Olympiad. His design was created by Viktor Chizhikov and was selected after a public response to the search for an Olympic bear mascot. Misha became one of the most recognizable and widely reproduced Olympic mascots of the 20th century. Olympic Museum
This handmade textile is an unusual expression of that imagery, translating the iconic mascot into the format and decorative vocabulary of a traditional rug.
