Chinese Famille Rose "Five Children" Laughing Buddha
Made by artisans in the Jingdezhen Porcelain Factories in Jiangxi Province, China, this iconic figure depicts a "Fertility Buddha" or Maitreya. In traditional Chinese culture, a Laughing Buddha depicted with exactly five children clambering over him is highly symbolic:
• The Children: They represent the ultimate blessing of a large, happy family and the continuation of the family lineage.
• The Number Five: This represents the traditional "Five Blessings" (Wufu) from Chinese philosophy: Longevity, Wealth, Health/Peace, Love of Virtue, and a Peaceful Death.
• The Objects: The Buddha holds a textile sack in one hand (meant to scoop up people's worries and sadness) and a string of Buddhist prayer beads (mala) in the other (symbolizing mindfulness, continuous meditation, and his status as an enlightened being [Maitreya]).

These are all located within the right leg of Buddha. Otherwise the glaze is shiny and the figure retains some of the red clay dust added by factories to make the objects appear older. less
