From Brown-Saltman of Los Angeles — the California house that would later send Paul Frankl and John Keal into America’s living rooms — this is the workshop’s traditional side: a heavy solid-wood double-pedestal desk from the “Montecito” line, stencil-stamped and numbered on the bottom (108040). Seven drawers, sculptural carved-wood pulls, plank sides with peg detail, bracket feet. Built when California modern still had one boot on the ranch.

Honest patina — light scratches to the top, consistent with age and use. Bubbles potentially due to a not so successful staining attempt. Would benefit from a light restoration. Structurally extremely sound, solid wood throughout, and all seven drawers slide smooth. A characterful desk with a real, very highly regarded maker’s mark.

Dimensions: 52”W × 28”D × 31”H; knee clearance 24.5”.

NOTE: photos 2 and 3 are digital mockups of the desk’s potential. The last photo is a snap of the side that the rest of the room would see. See less
