An exceptional and highly figured 19th-century American Empire chest of drawers that beautifully showcases a masterful blend of native American hardwoods. This striking commode features a bold, architectural layout characteristic of the classic early American Empire period (circa 1830–1840).
The piece boasts an incredibly dramatic facade, highlighted by curly, tiger, and birdseye maple drawer fronts that exhibit a luminous, deep chatoyance when caught in the light. The frame is anchored by a rich solid mahogany top featuring a tiger maple border and a scalloped gallery backsplash. Flanking the case are two monumental, solid mahogany S-scroll curved supports that terminate in elegant scroll feet, adding a distinctively sculptural dimension to the piece.
The chest offers abundant storage across its graduated drawer design, starting with a split double overhanging top drawer. The interior of the drawers remains in pristine, clean condition. Outfitted with what are believed to be their original turned wooden knobs, the drawers glide effortlessly and can be opened with one hand, a true testament to the historic joinery and care this piece has received over the last two centuries.
A warm, refreshed finish perfectly elevates the contrasting wood tones, making this an ideal statement piece for a grand entryway, bedroom, or living room.

The finish has been professionally refreshed to maximize the spectacular wood chatoyance. Structurally sound, solid, and sturdy, with all drawers opening smoothly with one hand. Pristine drawer interiors with no signs of previous heavy storage usage. Minor Age-Appropriate Imperfections (Noted for Accuracy): • Slight veneer loss on the bottom-right cabinet corner near the base drawer. • A small chip on the edge corner of the top overhanging drawer. • Historic evidence of old insect activity on the non-visible bottom structural base panel; this is completely inactive and does not impact structural integrity or appearance. less
