This lively and detailed oil on canvas depicts a village festival full of characters, music, dance and social gaiety. The painting is executed in the style of the Flemish Baroque and loosely follows the work of David Teniers the Younger (1610–1690), a well-known master of genre scenes of rural festivities and everyday life. The scene captures a moment of collective merriment in front of an inn – musicians, dancers and seated figures are at the center of the action, while the towers of a castle or city are outlined in the background. The work gives the impression of a colorful narrative and at the same time serves as a window into the everyday life of the common people of that time. The painting is signed in the lower right corner and framed in a richly decorated, gilded frame. On the back there is a label of the Belgian framer "HUIS VYNCKE" (Borgerhout, Antwerp).
