This remarkable antique Chinese rug from the early 20th century, circa 1900s, measures approximately 11'8" x 9'2" and features an exceptionally decorative pictorial composition filled with stylized animals, flowering branches, botanical forms, and ornamental motifs. Rather than relying on a conventional central medallion, the rug is organized as an elaborate repeating field in which pairs of animals are incorporated into a network of sweeping branches and large-scale floral elements.
The deep navy blue field creates a dramatic background for the warm ivory and beige animal figures. Throughout the composition, elongated branches in pale blue, aqua, beige, and muted teal curve diagonally across the field, connecting large palmettes, blossoms, leaves, and smaller floral details. The animal figures appear in multiple poses and orientations, creating movement across the otherwise highly structured design. Smaller decorative motifs fill the spaces between the principal elements, giving the rug visual interest at both a distance and close range.
Multiple borders frame the central field, including scrolling botanical forms, stylized flowers, cloud-like elements, and elongated decorative motifs. The border system continues the same sophisticated palette while creating a strong architectural frame around the pictorial interior.
The palette is particularly striking, combining deep navy blue, midnight blue, ivory, cream, warm beige, camel, pale blue, powder blue, muted aqua, teal, gray-blue, and touches of soft brown. Its restrained blue-and-neutral coloration gives the rug a sophisticated decorative character that works particularly well in both traditional and contemporary interiors.
At approximately 11'8" x 9'2", this is a substantial room-size carpet. Its combination of unusual animal imagery, botanical ornament, dramatic dark ground, and large proportions gives it a distinctive presence as both a functional floor covering and an antique decorative textile.
