Its form unfolds through a sequence of soft, concave and convex curves that appear to fold into one another, creating a sense of continuous motion despite the material’s inherent weight. The sculpture rests lightly on its edge, emphasizing a dynamic equilibrium that feels both intentional and precarious, as if the stone were momentarily paused mid rotation. The choice of Carrara marble is significant. Long associated with classical sculpture and architectural permanence, it is here treated with a sensitivity that departs from monumentality. The surface is finely polished, allowing subtle veining to emerge only when light glides across the form. This restraint keeps the material from overpowering the composition and instead reinforces the object’s tactile calm. The absence of sharp edges further softens the marble’s presence, inviting close inspection rather than distant reverence. The incised signature, reading Frie, offers only a partial point of reference. While the identity of the maker remains uncertain, the sculpture’s language aligns convincingly with postwar European abstraction, where Italian sculptors explored organic form through reduced, almost instinctive gestures. The work resonates with a period in which sculpture moved away from representation and toward pure spatial dialogue, often blurring the boundary between art object and architectural element. As an object, it occupies a compelling space between sculpture and design. It does not declare function, yet it engages its surroundings with quiet authority. Placed within an interior, it acts as a focal point that rewards time and attention, revealing new contours and shadows as the day progresses. In its anonymity, the piece gains strength, allowing form, material, and proportion to speak without distraction, anchoring it firmly within the lineage of thoughtful twentieth century European sculptural practice. And the piece remains, although its delicacy, in very good condition. See less
