A restrained play of circles gives this Italian mirror from the 1970s its distinctive architectural character. Warm-toned wood and polished metal create a measured contrast, typical of an era in which Italian designers increasingly combined traditional materials with industrial finishes.
Design
The circular mirror is surrounded by a broad veneered wooden frame, whose warm colour and visible grain provide a natural backdrop to the metal detailing. Three concentric chrome-plated bands follow the circumference of the mirror, progressively extending the reflective surface into the frame. Rather than functioning as applied decoration alone, these rings emphasise the geometry of the piece and give the relatively simple construction a sense of depth.
Its composition changes subtly according to the viewing angle. Light catches the rounded chrome profiles, creating narrow reflections against the darker timber, whilst the central mirror remains visually calm. This combination of wood, mirror glass and chrome became particularly associated with Italian interiors during the 1960s and 1970s, when designers frequently placed natural finishes alongside polished metals.
The generous wooden surround keeps the mirror from feeling overtly industrial. Equally, the chrome rings prevent it from becoming conventional, resulting in a balanced piece suited to an entrance hall, bedroom, dressing area or above a console. Its circular format also works well as a counterpoint to rectilinear furniture.
with its concentric construction and controlled combination of materials, this mirror captures the decorative confidence of 1970s Italian design. A functional object with a clear graphic presence, it sits comfortably within both period and contemporary interiors.
Condition
The mirror remains in good vintage condition, with signs of use consistent with age. Minor wear, small marks to the veneer and oxidation or surface wear to the chrome are visible, particularly on close inspection.
