Svendsen (1871–1959), depicting a quiet wooded river or stream rendered in expressive, painterly brushwork.

Rich layers of moss green, ochre, golden yellow, russet and soft blue-gray create a wonderfully atmospheric composition, with reflections loosely captured across the surface of the water. The confident, impressionistic handling gives the landscape a particularly appealing modern quality while retaining the character of an early 20th-century American painting.

Svendsen was a Cincinnati-born artist who studied at the Cincinnati Art Academy and continued his training in Paris at the Académie Julian and Académie Colarossi, studying with noted French academic painters William-Adolphe Bouguereau and Gabriel Ferrier. His work encompassed landscape, figure, historical and religious painting.

Signed “Charles C. Svendsen” at lower left.

The reverse retains an old typewritten label that appears to read “Drakes Creek near Franklin, Va.” followed by “Original painting by Charles C. Svendsen.” I would preserve that wording as appears to read rather than state the location definitively because of the label’s condition. See less
