Beautiful antique hand-carved polychrome wood devotional figure depicting a kneeling young woman in prayer. The figure wears a richly painted teal-blue skirt embellished with gold foliate motifs, a muted rose-colored blouse and a cream veil, with delicately modeled facial features and hands.
The carving has wonderful Old World character, retaining an aged painted surface with visible craquelure, rubbing, losses and surface wear developed over time. The hollow-carved construction and hand-worked details further contribute to its sculptural presence.
The figure has previously been identified as St. Bernadette, although the attribution has not been independently authenticated. Its exact maker, country of origin and date are unknown.
Approximately 17” H × 6” W × 9” D.
A beautiful piece of antique religious folk art with tremendous decorative presence, particularly suited to a collected, Spanish Colonial, Mediterranean, ecclesiastical or Old World interior.
