Vintage Big Sur Redwood Burl Chair & Ottoman — Attributed to Burlwood Industries, Monterey, California
An extraordinary vintage redwood burl lounge chair and matching ottoman, believed to have been made by Burlwood Industries of Monterey, California, a noted Central Coast maker of sculptural redwood furniture and carvings during the 1970s and 1980s.
Burlwood Industries was founded by George Buck in Carmel in the early 1970s and became known for transforming massive California redwood burls, roots, driftwood, and natural-edge slabs into distinctive handcrafted furniture and sculptural works.
This impressive chair and ottoman embody that unmistakable California organic design aesthetic.
The chair is constructed from massive sections of beautifully figured redwood burl and naturally formed root wood. Thick slab armrests, dramatic knots, voids, twisting roots, and an enormous sculptural back make the chair visually striking from every angle.
The coordinating ottoman is equally substantial, constructed from large natural redwood sections that complement the chair beautifully.
A plush sheepskin covering adds warmth and comfort while allowing the remarkable wood structure to remain the centerpiece.
