A Spanish Colonial sillón de cadera, or hip-joint chair — a historic curule-style seating form with roots in medieval Spain, carried through centuries of Spanish and Spanish Colonial furniture-making. This example has a carved wood X-frame hinged at a central medallion, with fine taracea-style inlay throughout: tumbling-block parquetry banding along the tops of both arms, and repeating eight-pointed Mudéjar star motifs with diamond insets along the lower braces. The sling-style seat and back are upholstered in a multi-tonal blue woven tweed.
According to family and ownership history, this chair furnished a Wallace Neff–designed residence in Los Angeles's Hancock Park, built for Erle M. Leaf — a home later featured in Architectural Digest, January 1934.
A sculptural, architectural piece that works equally well as a statement accent chair, a vanity or dressing seat, or flanking seating in an entry or library.
Good vintage condition, no maker's marks present.

The chair was reupholstered at some point — the original burgundy fabric remains stapled beneath the current blue tweed upholstery, which shows some overall fading, light staining on the seat, and a small, visible sewing repair. A fresh reupholstery would be a simple way to bring the piece fully back to life. The wood frame is solid and stable, with expected edge wear at the top roll of the backrest and the base of the front foot brace. A hairline line and old repair point on the back upright below the backrest suggest a possible historic reinforcement; it is currently sturdy, and this is a visual observation only, not a confirmed structural issue. less
