Solbrig transforms a floral still life into an energetic composition of saturated color, expressive brushwork and richly worked surfaces. Rather than precisely delineating individual flowers, she builds the composition through overlapping passages of pink, red, violet, blue, green and yellow, allowing the image to move between representation and abstraction.

The painting is signed and dated 1985 by the artist and retains documentation on the reverse relating to its history and exhibition provenance. It was acquired from an Indiana gallery in 1992 and was later associated with the Art Beyond Sight program.

Mary E. Solbrig was an Indiana artist active in regional exhibitions and arts organizations. She was a member of Northern Indiana Artists and the St. Joseph Watercolor Society and a charter member of the National Museum of Women in the Arts. Her documented honors include Best of Show at the Elkhart Art League in 1991, first place at the South Bend Regional Museum of Art in 1992, and a purchase award from the Midwest Museum of American Art in 1993.
