A wonderfully sculptural pair of vintage African hand-carved wood busts, dating to approximately the mid-20th century.
Each figure is dramatically stylized with an exceptionally elongated neck, geometric torso and boldly modeled facial features. The two figures have distinct coiffures and carved details, including jewelry and decorative elements across the torsos, while their closely related proportions and carving style create a particularly striking pair.
The sculptures are especially compelling when displayed facing one another, where their exaggerated profiles give the pair an almost conversational quality. Their elongated forms and simplified geometry also give them a distinctly modernist presence well suited to both contemporary and mid-century interiors.
Hand-carved from dark-toned hardwood with a naturally aged surface and visible evidence of individual workmanship. The undersides are incised with the numbers “1” and “3,” possibly workshop, model or series numbers. Their precise significance is presently unknown.
Similar stylized African wood sculptures were produced during the mid-20th century both for local markets and for the growing international decorative and export trade. While the elongated necks and carved coiffures have parallels in several West and Central African sculptural traditions, there is presently insufficient evidence to attribute this pair to a particular cultural group or country. Accordingly, they are presented simply as vintage African decorative sculpture rather than as ceremonial or ethnographic objects. Museum collections demonstrate that elongated-neck sculptural conventions occur across culturally complex regions and can be difficult to attribute precisely.
Africa, circa 1950s–1970s, probably 1960s.
Artist/workshop unknown.
