An absolutely exquisite antique French linen top sheet, made from remarkably fine, supple white linen with a beautiful hand and extraordinary handworked details.
The sheet features a large elegant AG monogram embroidered in white, above an elaborate band of hand-drawn thread openwork. The pulled threads have been carefully wrapped and woven into a decorative open pattern, accompanied by a second narrow drawn-thread band.
The crowning detail is the magnificent hand-crocheted lace border, worked in deep repeating scallops with intricate fan-like motifs. It is exceptionally decorative while retaining the refined delicacy of the very fine linen.
A wonderful example of the painstaking handwork traditionally lavished on French trousseau linens, when even a bedsheet could represent weeks of skilled needlework.
Professionally laundered, cleaned and pressed. The cleaners folded the sheet inside out after laundering, which is why the monogram appears reversed in some photographs.
There is one very small hole in the linen, shown clearly in the photographs. It could be carefully hand-mended if desired, but has intentionally been left as found rather than concealing the flaw.
