A distinguished antique Chinese altar console whose long, slender silhouette balances architectural strength with finely articulated ornament. Gracefully upturned ends, pierced scroll brackets, and molded legs give the piece a sculptural presence, while the richly figured tabletop brings warmth and expressive surface character.
Attributed to the late Qing–early Republic period, circa 1880–1920, the table follows the classical Chinese qiaotou’an (翘头案), or raised-end table, tradition. Its recessed legs create a generous overhang beneath the framed top, allowing the curved ends and carved spandrels to define the composition. Parallel beaded moldings draw the eye down the legs, while paired end stretchers reinforce the balanced, open framework.
The warm amber-brown tabletop contrasts beautifully with the deep reddish-brown, oxblood-toned base. Rubbed edges reveal lighter highlights, and darker color within the carved recesses accentuates the scrollwork. For collectors, the appeal lies in this combination of classical form, individual surface character, and surviving physical details—including two wax export-inspection seals and handwritten underside markings.
At 63 inches wide and just 15 inches deep, the console offers substantial presence within a versatile footprint. It is particularly compelling beneath a large mirror in an entry hall, along a passage hung with collected artwork, or behind a sofa supporting porcelain and sculptural lighting. Its restrained architecture complements contemporary interiors, while its rich coloration feels equally at home among English country antiques, chinoiserie, antique textiles, and traditional maximalist furnishings.
Historical Background & Collecting Context
Raised-end tables occupy an enduring place in Chinese furniture history. Although commonly described as altar tables in Western collecting, qiaotou’an also served as display surfaces for ceramics, flower arrangements, scholars’ objects, and treasured antiques.
Examples appear in Ming-period paintings and woodblock illustrations, documenting their use within domestic interiors. Long tables with recessed legs furnished reception halls and provided composed settings for both ceremonial objects and personal collections.
This example carries that design tradition forward through its everted ends, carved cloud-scroll brackets, molded detailing, and balanced proportions. The period attribution is approximate; its original workshop and household are undocumented.

Surviving Seals & Underside Markings
Two separate circular wax export-inspection seals remain on the table: one on the tabletop and another on a lower end stretcher. The tabletop impression bears “CUSTOMS PERMISSION” lettering and a geometric emblem consistent with the Chinese inspection-seal design introduced in 1994. The second impression displays a similar central emblem, with less distinct peripheral details.
The underside also retains handwritten factory or warehouse inventory markings. Their specific meaning has not been deciphered.
These surviving marks add interest to the table’s later commercial history. The seals relate to export inspection and do not independently establish its manufacturing date or original ownership.
Finish & Patina
The tabletop displays warm amber-brown coloration, prominent grain, and natural tonal variation above a deeply colored oxblood-toned framework. Softened edges, localized finish wear, and darker carved recesses give definition to the architectural details and contribute to the piece’s individual character.
