The painting has its original ornate, gilt frame featuring scrolling as well as foliate and floral accents. The painting has a pale blue sky with clouds while the land is made up of trees, foliage, rocks and dirt. The water in the horizontal center of the painting reflects the trees and sun. The painting has a pleasing composition and proportions, clearly painted by a skilled artist, who has signed his or her name in black in the lower left. It is difficult to make out the signature. Initially we thought Z. Wouley, but an Amsterdam antique dealer weighed in suggesting, "J. Wouters", possibly Johannes Jacobus Wouters 1837-1897".
As you can see from the photos, the painting has yellowed due to age. The greens are no longer vibrant but have faded into mostly brown, which is common in old European paintings. The chemical nature of the green pigments did not hold their color over time, perhaps due in part to light exposure. The painting was collected in Amsterdam in the 1980s or 1990s and has a small sticker on the back in Dutch.
Measurements with frame: 19.25"H x 23.25W x 2.75"D
Measurements of panel in frame window: 11.25"H x 15.25"W
Condition commensurate with age and use. The painting itself could use a cleaning by a licensed conservator. Or you could hang the painting as is for a great antique look! The old frame has had many repairs in its lifetime, when the plaster chipped off, but the overall appearance of the frame is fine. See less
