Large hand-painted oil painting after François Lemoyne’s celebrated Hercules and Omphale, originally painted in 1724. The richly composed mythological scene depicts Hercules and Queen Omphale accompanied by Cupid beneath dramatic crimson drapery, rendered in the grand French academic tradition.
Presented in an impressive ornate gilt frame with deeply molded scrolling and foliate ornamentation. The substantial scale and warm, aged finish give the work wonderful Old World presence.
The painting is unsigned and is a later interpretation after Lemoyne; it is not represented as an original work by the artist. Executed on a canvas/textile support with rigid backing. Exact age and artist are unknown.
Overall dimensions: approximately 49” H × 38.5” W.
A dramatic decorative painting for a traditional, French, Baroque Revival, Grand Tour, maximalist or collected interior.

The painting shows areas of craquelure, surface wear and tonal variation consistent with age. The ornate gilt frame has visible rubbing, small losses, chips and areas of finish wear that contribute to its aged character. The work presents beautifully overall.
