n exceptional 17th-century engraving dating to 1649, depicting the biblical scene Solomon Anointed, after the celebrated fresco composition by Italian Renaissance master Raphael (Raffaello Sanzio, 1483–1520).
The engraving is from the series of biblical scenes after Raphael's frescoes in the Vatican Loggia and was executed by French engraver Nicolas Chaperon (1612–1656).
The detailed composition depicts the anointing of Solomon surrounded by a gathering of figures, rendered with beautifully articulated drapery, expressive gestures, and intricate engraved line work. Chaperon's engraving translates Raphael's monumental Renaissance composition into a remarkably detailed work on paper.
The lower margin retains the original engraved inscriptions and plate markings.
Presented in an elegant traditional frame with a wide neutral linen-textured mat and contrasting inner border. The sophisticated framing gives the relatively intimate engraving a substantial decorative presence and makes it ready for display.
Accompanied by a Gallery Certificate of Authenticity from KCM Galleries, identifying the work as an antique engraving on laid paper dated 1649, after Raphael and engraved by Nicolas Chaperon.
This work makes an especially compelling companion to another 1649 Chaperon engraving after Raphael, Baby Moses Placed in the Nile in a Basket, which is also available separately.
