From the living estate of renowned Arizona based brutalist sculpture artist John Gleason, bring joy, abundance, and timeless Asian artistry into your space with this striking, large vintage hand-carved stone statue of Budai, globally celebrated as the Laughing Buddha or Hotei. Masterfully sculpted from a solid block of natural variegated green soapstone (serpentine), this impressive piece showcases beautiful organic veining with pale mint and deep olive undertones.
The statue depicts a classic standing presentation of the folklore figure. He boasts an exceptionally expressive, joyous smile, a textured topknot, and a wonderfully rounded belly symbolizing prosperity. In his raised left hand, he cradles a small offering pot, while his right hand holds his signature wealth sack resting casually against his side. The flowing details of his robed garments drape smoothly toward the heavy base, creating an excellent balance between intricate figural carving and the raw weight of the natural mineral medium. Perfect as a grand statement piece for a mantle, entry console, or an elegant Zen-inspired interior design display.
