A seated prelate reads from an open book, the other leans over him with an amused expression and listens. The painting works with a rich range of red tones and warm light, which models the volume of the draperies and the facial expressions of the figures. Pasty, in places markedly brush-brushed glaze, darker background with a hint of architecture and a garden corner; overall a slightly anecdotal, kindly ironic motif popular in the late 19th century (tradition of the French and Italian genre of “cardinals”). Condition: good original condition, in places minor surface dirt, local abrasions and minor craquelure in red areas; canvas firm, without holes. Older inventory marking on the reverse. Ready to hang.
