Vondrouš depicts a panoramic view of the town of Čáslav with the dominant tower of the Church of St. Peter and Paul, surrounded by urban development and rich greenery in the foreground. The work is signed and dated "Vondrouš 1948" at the bottom right. The graphic is set in the original frame. The author Jan Charles Vondrouš was born in 1884 in Chotusice near Čáslav and died in 1970 in Prague. He was a prominent Czech graphic artist and painter, a member of the Hollar Association of Czech Graphic Artists. He studied at the National Academy of Design in New York, where he devoted himself to painting, drawing and graphic techniques. After returning to his homeland, he focused primarily on etching and colored graphics. His native region plays a significant role in his work - he often depicted Čáslav, Kutná Hora and other historical Czech towns. In 1948, when this work was created, the Hollar Association dedicated a retrospective exhibition to him, which confirmed his place among the leading Czech graphic artists of the 20th century. The graphic represents an example of his characteristic style – precise drawing, a sense for detail and the atmosphere of the landscape and architecture, delicate colors and compositional balance. The work is a valuable collector's item with a connection to the author's native region and Czech cultural tradition.
