Designed during wim rietveld’s most influential period at gispen, the lamp embodies the principles that defined his work: reduction to essentials, honest use of materials, and adaptability to everyday life. This particular example is distinguished by its lime yellow lacquered aluminium shade, a vivid and expressive variation that brings a strong graphic presence to the wall. The fresh, energetic color contrasts beautifully with the restrained metal construction and highlights the sculptural simplicity of the design. Far from decorative excess, the color reinforces the lamp’s modernist identity and reflects the optimism of 1950s design culture. An important and increasingly rare feature of this lamp is the presence of its original polyester diffuser. Often lost over time, this element plays a crucial role in shaping the light output, gently softening the glow and creating a warm, atmospheric illumination. The diffuser is elegantly secured inside the shade by three small metal hooks, a subtle detail that reveals the thoughtful precision behind the design. The panama wall lamp is equally notable for its ingenious adjustability. The red key mounted on the wall plate controls the mechanism that allows both vertical and horizontal movement, ensuring stability in every position. The arm swivels smoothly, while the shade can be angled upward or downward, making the lamp suitable for reading, accent lighting, or general ambient use. With its original diffuser intact and its expressive lime yellow shade, this lamp transcends functionality and becomes a collectible design object. It shows light signs of age consistent with its history, yet remains remarkably authentic and well preserved. A rare opportunity to acquire a functional icon of twentieth century dutch design that continues to feel relevant, intelligent, and visually striking today.
