A substantial antique Royal Doulton Lambeth stoneware pitcher decorated in the celebrated Natural Foliage Ware technique, dating to the early 20th century.
Introduced by Doulton in the late 19th century, Natural Foliage Ware was created by pressing actual leaves into the surface of the wet clay before firing. The leaves disappeared during the firing process, leaving their finely detailed natural impressions within the stoneware. As a result, each example has an individual, organic character.
This particularly attractive pitcher is decorated with richly textured overlapping foliage beneath a deep, lustrous glaze in warm shades of chestnut brown, amber, olive green and treacle. The substantial baluster-shaped body, pronounced pouring lip and generous handle give the piece a strong sculptural presence characteristic of Doulton's Lambeth art pottery.
The underside carries the impressed Royal Doulton lion-and-crown factory mark used during the early 20th century, together with impressed workshop marks, initials and the number 1870.
A highly decorative example of English Arts and Crafts and Art Nouveau-period stoneware, equally suited to a collection of Royal Doulton Lambeth pottery or as a striking decorative vessel in a contemporary interior.
