This super rare set of four pp51/3 chairs, often referred to as the v chair, represents a late and highly refined exploration of form by hans j. Wegner.
produced in 1988 by pp møbler, the model revisits one of wegner’s most iconic investigations, the three legged chair, while translating it into a distinctly new and contemporary expression. Where his earlier valet chair and heart chair from 1952 to 1953 relied on expressive silhouettes and sculptural presence, the pp51/3 is quieter, more architectural, and remarkably resolved in its construction. The defining feature of the design is the absence of a traditional top rail. Instead, wegner introduces a beautifully proportioned v formed backrest that provides both structural integrity and visual lightness. When viewed from behind, the chair reveals one of its most captivating details: the finely crafted joint where the half free floating rear frame meets the v shaped back element. This junction exemplifies wegner’s mastery of joinery and his ability to transform structural necessity into visual poetry. The chairs are crafted from solid ash wood and finished with a traditional soap treatment, a surface treatment wegner frequently employed for its ability to preserve the natural grain while lending the wood a lighter, almost white washed appearance. The result is a soft, tactile surface that ages gracefully. This set is in very good original condition, showing a beautiful and honest patina developed through careful use over time. Each chair retains its original pp møbler sticker on the underside, confirming authenticity and provenance. In addition to this set of four ash examples, another set of four chairs in oak is available, offering the opportunity to create a playful and visually rich set of eight by combining both wood types. Please note that the listed price applies exclusively to the set of four ash chairs. Hans j. Wegner remains one of the most influential figures in twentieth century furniture design, celebrated for redefining the chair as an object of both everyday use and sculptural clarity. His long standing collaboration with pp møbler allowed him to pursue uncompromising craftsmanship and structural experimentation well into the later stages of his career.
the pp51/3 v chair stands as a testament to this enduring partnership, capturing wegner’s lifelong pursuit of honesty in materials, clarity in construction, and timeless human centered design.
