The evolution of man
a set of three large oil paintings on canvas, most likely conceived as cartoons or preparatory models for tapestries or a large-scale mural program. Possibly by aubusson.
each piece measures 306 x 143 cm, 310 x 142 cm, and 304 x 140 cm.
together, they form a monumental composition over four meters wide.
the three scenes develop an allegorical narrative about the evolution of human life and human activities: a winter scene with figures, animals, and equestrians; a rural harvest scene with figures gathering fruit and a family group; and a third composition related to work and water, with numerous figures in an idealized landscape.
the monumental conception, the simplification of volumes, the frieze-like arrangement of figures, and the allegorical and decorative character place the work within the tradition of late 19th-century french mural painting, closely aligned with the style developed by pierre puvis de chavannes (1824–1898) and his circle/influence.
puvis made extensive use of preparatory studies for his large mural decorations; among others, preparatory grid drawings directly linked to his monumental compositions are documented.
the work also retains the later reference/inscription already documented: “l’évolution de l’homme (puvis de chavanne) 1.43 × 3.00”. This inscription should be understood as an attribution or historical reference, not as an autograph signature of the artist.
france, late 19th century, ca. 1880–1900.
technique: oil painting / painting technique on canvas.
measurements: approximately 300 × 143 cm each piece.
set: three pieces.
condition: commensurate with their age and, especially, their extraordinary size. They exhibit widespread craquelure, rubbing, paint loss, wear, and peripheral deterioration, clearly visible in the photographs.
they are preserved without restoration. This piece is attributed to the mentioned designer/maker. It has no attribution mark and no
official proof of authenticity,
however it is well documented in design history. I take full responsibility for any authenticity
issues arising from misattribution
