Walker circa 1870, is unlike almost every other sheet in the atlas because it carries no fox-hunting boundaries at all. The hand colour, in pink, yellow and green, follows the county's ancient hundreds instead: west derby, salford, leyland, blackburn, amounderness and lonsdale, as keyed in the reference table at upper right, together with the detached northern portion around furness, tinted green and separated from the main body of the county by morecambe bay. No hunt name is lettered anywhere on the sheet. It is a full and detailed county plate: liverpool, manchester and the industrial towns of the south appear with their converging railway lines in red, the furness fells in the north are rendered in dense hachure shading, and morecambe bay's sands are noted with the coastal crossing routes across them. The cartouche, with the county name, the walker authorship line and the statistical note, sits at upper right above a list of the boroughs and their members. The atlas was compiled by william colling hobson, with maps engraved by john and charles walker, the london firm of j. And c. Walker, and published by longman and company of paternoster row. First issued around 1850 and reissued into the 1870s, hobson's fox-hunting atlas maps every county of england and the three ridings of yorkshire, elsewhere adding the boundaries of the hunt countries in hand colour. This sheet belongs to the edition of circa 1870 and is a steel engraving, its original hand colour applied in outline. On this sheet the colouring records civil divisions rather than a hunting country. This antique hobson county map of lancashire is an original sheet from the atlas and is suitable for framing; it is of particular interest to hunting families, to collectors of the county and to anyone with a connection to the place. The sheet is in fair to good condition for its age, with age toning, stronger towards the edges, light spotting, faint offsetting in the lower margin and a central fold. Please review the images for further condition details. This is an original antique map, not a modern reproduction. This item is sold unframed.
