Mid-century sideboard designed by Oswald Vermaecke for V-Form - Belgium
A beautiful Scandinavian-style sideboard, designed by Oswald Vermaecke for V-Form in the 1960s-70s. The piece embodies the aesthetic of mid-century Scandinavian design. It is made of wood (solid and veneer) with a warm tone and uniform grain, likely beech or teak. The front is organized into two distinct sections. On the left side, there is a set of four drawers, whose fronts are one of the most distinctive features of the piece. Each drawer has a geometric decoration of curved and undulating shapes carved into the wood itself. The rest of the sideboard consists of a large enclosed space with two sliding doors, a feature particularly characteristic of this type of piece. The discreet, circular handles, almost integrated into the surface, contribute to the overall understated elegance.
One of the main attractions of the piece is precisely the contrast between the rectilinear surfaces and the curved forms. The top and base exhibit a distinctly horizontal style, while the legs, drawer fronts, and ornamental details introduce organic lines that soften the overall geometry. The result is a balanced, elegant, and visually light design, despite its generous dimensions. The sideboard stands on four independent wooden legs that raise it off the floor and reinforce the feeling of lightness.
It cannot be conclusively attributed to any designer in the absence of a label, mark, documentation, or construction element that would allow for definitive authorship. However, it is certainly a genuine period piece.
Oswald Vermaercke (1926) was a Belgian furniture designer closely associated with V-Form, the company for which he worked as a designer and sales manager. His work spanned primarily the 1950s to 1970s, coinciding with the renewal of Belgian furniture and the growing influence of Scandinavian design. His furniture is characterized by the use of clean, horizontal lines, highly functional structures, and a careful selection of woods. During the 1950s and 1960s, teak and rosewood veneers were particularly prominent, materials that Vermaercke personally selected during his travels.
Among his best-known designs is the Paola series, created in 1959, which included various furniture types, such as sideboards, tall cabinets, and low versions. Some surviving examples of this series feature teak compositions with drawers and sliding doors, formally reminiscent of contemporary Danish furniture. The name Paola refers to Princess Paola of Belgium, whose marriage to the then Prince Albert took place in 1959.
V-Form was a Belgian furniture company based in Petegem-aan-de-Schelde, in East Flanders, whose activity was primarily between the 1950s and 1970s. The company produced various types of household furniture, including sideboards, tables, chairs, and occasional furniture, within a style linked to international modern design. Its early production was notable for the use of high-quality teak and rosewood veneers, while during the 1970s it progressively incorporated Resisto Finish, a more durable and economical finishing system.
The company ceased operations in 1978. In 2003, Oswald Vermaercke donated the V-Form historical archives to the Design Museum in Ghent, contributing to the preservation of documentation related to the company and its production. The existence of these archives is especially relevant for the study and cataloging of furniture designed by Vermeacke and manufactured by V-Form.
