A 1970s Murano glass Sommerso paperweight designed by Antonio da Ros for Cenedese, featuring a sculptural cylindrical form with a spherical glass knob and a composition of cyan blue, forest green, and clear crystal glass. The center contains an organically shaped mass of deep translucent forest green glass, surrounded by a vivid layer of cyan blue and encased within clear crystal. The Sommerso technique creates a sense of depth and suspension, allowing the contrasting colors to remain distinct while appearing to merge through the transparent outer layer. Light passing through the glass reveals subtle variations in tone, emphasizing the relationship between the internal green form and the surrounding blue. The cylindrical body is finished with a gently rounded shoulder and a spherical clear glass knob, giving the paperweight a distinctive architectural silhouette. Its substantial glass construction and polished base provide stability, while the rounded upper element introduces a contrasting softness to the otherwise geometric form. Antonio da Ros is closely associated with the development of sculptural Murano glass during his work with the Venetian glassmaker Gino Cenedese. His designs frequently explored the expressive possibilities of the Sommerso technique, combining contrasting layers of colored glass with abstract internal forms and carefully considered proportions. This paperweight reflects that approach through its restrained external geometry and the organic green element suspended within the glass. Da Ros's work for Cenedese remains of interest to collectors of 20th-century Italian glass, particularly examples that demonstrate his distinctive use of color, transparency, and sculptural form. The paperweight is in very good vintage condition, with minor surface wear to the polished base and some minuscule fleabites to the spherical knob.
