Published by Rand McNally in 1899, this antique map of Ohio is a double-page county map on pages 178 and 179 of the indexed atlas, from Lake Erie and the Michigan border to the Ohio River, with an inset of Hamilton County and Cincinnati. A very dense red railroad network is keyed by number to a legend of well over a hundred companies running down the left margin, among them the Baltimore and Ohio, several separately numbered Cleveland lines, the New York, Chicago and Saint Louis, the Pittsburgh, Cincinnati and Saint Louis, and the several roads of Toledo. It records a density of lines that by 1899 made Ohio one of the most thoroughly served states in the country, and the railroad legend, more than any political colouring, is the sheet's chief distinguishing feature. The boxed inset at lower right, "Map of Hamilton County, Ohio", enlarges the Cincinnati area to show the city and its surrounding townships. Across the main map the Western Reserve counties of the northeast, the Miami Valley in the southwest and the hill country along the Ohio River are distinguishable by their settlement patterns, the northern and western counties carrying a noticeably denser scatter of towns and rail lines than the rugged southeast. Scale is given as 13 statute miles to the inch, and a note at the foot directs the reader to the adjoining Michigan, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Kentucky and Indiana maps. Rand McNally's roots lie in a Chicago printing business started by William Rand in the 1850s and joined by Andrew McNally. The firm had become one of the foremost map publishers in the United States by the 1890s, and its indexed atlas of 1899 shows the house speciality at work: railroad and commercial maps revised from issue to issue. In technique it is a lithograph printed in colour, with the black outline printed first and the pastel colours printed over it. Once framed, this antique map of Ohio would suit a home or office in the state today, and it will appeal to collectors of American state maps and railroad history. The sheet is in good condition for its age, with light, even age toning, minor handling wear to the sheet edges and the original central fold as issued. Please review the images for further condition details. This is an original antique map, not a modern reproduction. This item is sold unframed. Any framed or interior images are shown for presentation and inspiration only, unless the listing explicitly states that the item is sold framed.
