An antique map of Quebec from Rand McNally's 1899 indexed atlas, this double-page spread on pages 386 and 387 covers the settled Saint Lawrence valley of the province from Ottawa and the Pontiac district in the west to Quebec City, the Saguenay and Lake Saint John in the east. County and district boundaries, Ottawa, Pontiac, Argenteuil, Terrebonne, Montcalm, Joliette, Berthier, Champlain, Portneuf, Quebec, Montmorency and Charlevoix, are outlined in red, and a dense red-lettered railroad network, numbered to a legend of nearly twenty companies at upper right, radiates from Quebec City and Montreal, among them the Canadian Pacific, the Intercolonial, the Quebec Central and the Quebec and Lake Saint John lines. Two insets extend the coverage beyond the main frame. At upper left, "North Eastern Portion of Quebec" reaches out to the Gaspe Peninsula, Bonaventure and Chaleurs Bay, Anticosti Island and the Gulf of Saint Lawrence, at the same scale as the main map. At lower right, "Western Portion of Quebec, Same Scale as Main Map" carries the Ottawa River valley on to Lake Temiscamingue and the Pontiac district on the Ontario border. The sheet is left uncoloured apart from the red boundary and railroad overlay, with the seigneurial river-lot pattern along the Saint Lawrence, the long narrow farm strips running back from the water, rendered in fine parallel hachure lines. A note at the foot directs the atlas user to the adjoining maps of New Brunswick, Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, New York and Ontario, a reminder that these plates were designed to be read as a continuous, cross-indexed whole. Rand McNally grew from a Chicago printing business started in the 1850s by William Rand and joined by Andrew McNally, and by the 1890s it was one of the leading map publishers in the United States. This antique map of Quebec is an original 1899 colour lithograph, the outline printed in black with the red printed over it, issued folded through the centre and suitable for framing. The colour is printed rather than applied by hand. The sheet is in good condition for its age, with light, even age toning, minor handling wear to the sheet edges and the original central fold as issued. Please review the images for further condition details. This is an original antique map, not a modern reproduction. This item is sold unframed. Any framed or interior images are shown for presentation and inspiration only, unless the listing explicitly states that the item is sold framed.
