Sculpture "Woman" by Sebastián Miranda, Bronze, 20th Century - Spain
Extraordinary bronze sculpture signed Sebastián Miranda, 20th century, Spain. It depicts a woman, a recurring theme in his work. Popular female figures are treated with a highly personal realism, far removed from both rigid academicism and radical avant-garde movements.
The figure presents a vertical and compact composition, enlivened by a gentle twist of the body that breaks the frontality. The shift of weight to one leg and the slight inclination of the head add dynamism and reinforce the serene and introspective character of the work. The volume is conceived as a unified mass in which the cloak plays a fundamental role. The ample folds do not seek to faithfully depict the fabric, but rather to organize the composition through undulating lines that guide the eye and accentuate the rhythm of the figure. Beneath the drapery, the female anatomy is suggested, integrated in a synthetic and expressive way. The surface displays an irregular texture that retains traces of the modeling, enriching the effects of light and shadow. This material vibrancy lends depth and visual dynamism. The face, with its soft features and downcast gaze, concentrates much of the sculpture's expressiveness.
Regarding the artist, Sebastián Miranda y Pérez-Herce (Oviedo, 1885 – Madrid, 1975) is considered one of the most important Asturian sculptors of the 20th century. He trained in Germany, France, and Italy, and spent time in Paris and Rome before settling in Madrid. His work focused on figurative sculpture, especially portraits, genre scenes, gypsy figures, depictions of motherhood, and bullfighting themes. His best-known work is the "Retablo del Mar" (Altarpiece of the Sea), created for Gijón, although he also distinguished himself with small sculptures of great expressive power and a large body of drawings and caricatures.
