Rand McNally printed this antique map of North Carolina across pages 122 and 123 of its 1899 indexed atlas, a double-page county map reaching from the Outer Banks to the Blue Ridge, with the mountain counties carried in a separate inset. The map runs from the Virginia border to the South Carolina line and from the Tennessee border to Pamlico Sound. The inset at lower left, "Western Portion of North Carolina, on Same Scale", covers Haywood, Buncombe, Transylvania and the other mountain counties, where the Great Smoky and Blue Ridge country is printed in continuous hachured relief. Albemarle Sound, Pamlico Sound and the barrier-island chain, with Currituck, Dare and Hyde among the sound-side counties, are drawn in fine hydrographic detail. A railroad legend numbered in red at lower right lists over fifty companies, the Atlantic Coast Line, the Atlantic and Danville, the Carolina and Northwestern, the Norfolk and Southern, the Seaboard Air Line and the Wilmington Sea Coast line among them, with Raleigh, the capital, and Charlotte, Wilmington and Greensboro anchoring the densest junctions. The Piedmont counties of Guilford, Randolph, Rowan and Cabarrus show markedly more settlement detail than the sand-hill and coastal-plain counties. Scale is given as 14 statute miles to the inch, and a note at the foot directs the reader to the adjoining Virginia, South Carolina, Georgia and Tennessee maps. Rand, McNally and Company grew out of a Chicago printing business started in the 1850s by William Rand, who was soon joined by Andrew McNally. By the 1890s the firm was one of the leading map publishers in the United States, and this sheet belongs squarely to the railroad and commercial maps it was known for, revised from issue to issue. Technically the sheet is a lithograph with printed colour: the outline was printed in black and the colours were printed over it, so none of the colouring was added by hand. Once framed, this antique map of North Carolina would suit a home or office in the state today, and it will appeal to collectors of American state maps and railroad history. The sheet is in good condition for its age, with light age toning, a small cluster of spots in the lower right area, minor edge wear and the original central fold as issued. Please review the images for further condition details. This is an original antique map, not a modern reproduction. This item is sold unframed. Any framed or interior images are shown for presentation and inspiration only, unless the listing explicitly states that the item is sold framed.
